Companies like Boss, Ibanez and Digitech began mass producing single effect pedals in the 70′s and 80′s, but professional guitarists began to realize that chaining together 8 or 10 (or more) effects pedals together into one pedal board became cumbersome, so the rack-mount multi effect unit was born. This allowed players like David Gilmour to re-create their incredible recorded sounds in a live setting.
