An enjoyable ending is one of the most troublesome of all formal requirements. Since the ending is heard in the light of the whole movement, the balances affecting it are sophisticated: it must gratify the listener on several architectonic levels together. It must wholly close off (solve) any outstanding motivic, rhythmic, dynamic or melodic momentum.
